Fuse Cutout: Study, Analysis, Design and Procurement of Fuse Cutout 20/24kV, 12.5kA with Composite Insulator

PARALOS, as a supplier of materials and equipment for HEDNO's medium voltage overhead distribution network, designed, manufactured, successfully tested and supplied the new fuse cutout (F/C) in accredited laboratories. The F/C automatically interrupts and isolates the line in case of overcurrent, with the aim of protecting substations and distribution lines.

In order to design a product capable of withstanding electrical and mechanical stresses of such power, PARALOS carried out a Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis on the F/C base (bracket), considering the forces involved and the material strength limits. In addition, in collaboration with the Metallography Laboratory & Laboratory of Mechanical Testing of PPC, metallurgical examination and mechanical tests were conducted to determine the material composition and to optimize the casting process. Finally, in collaboration with the Machine Dynamics Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a mathematical analysis and simulation of the actual operation of the F/C in the field were performed.

In conclusion, the product was redesigned and through iterative analyses, calculations, and simulations, improved design was developed, resulting in the successful completion of the tests.
